Note: The Yellow Jackets lost to Lucas Lovejoy Friday night, 54-30, in district play. DHS is now 1-6, 1-3 for the season.
Given the loss, overall, how did your team do against Lovejoy?
“Our offense needs to get on blocks, stay on blocks and sustain drives. On defense, we need to transition what we learn on the practice field to the game field. We are not doing it when it counts.”
Specifically, what did the offense do well and not so well?
“We are getting better overall, but we’ve got to take it to the next level. We got to be more consistent. (Senior quarterback) Clifton Hines managed the game pretty well, but we’ve got to do more.”
How about the defense against Lovejoy?
“It’s simple; we’ve got to do better tackling and covering. We’ve got to get off blocks. We gave up 700 yards in offense to them. That cannot happen.”
Is there anyone you’d like to single out for his play against Lovejoy?
“Yes, (senior) R.J. Polk. He had that kick-off return for a touchdown; he had an interception at the goal line and he blocked a punt. He had a very good game.”
It was Homecoming and ‘Pink Out’ at Munson Stadium on Friday. Did this have any effect on the team’s play?
“I think it was a distraction. I think it got to our players a little bit. I didn’t get them ready to play; to be focused on Friday night. I need to do a better job of that regardless of what’s going on at the stadium.”
Now, there are only three games left; all district ones. There has been talk of playoffs after a two year layoff; and this week, you are at Wylie. What do you expect from them?
“They are a good football team. They run the spread offense; they pass first and run second. We can match up well with them.”
What will you have to do to win this game?
“First, we’ve got to cover better in the secondary; or they will be passing all night. We’ve got to tackle better and line up right every play.”
What about your offense and special teams?
“We have to sustain drives; every one of them. We need to block and get the run going. Our special teams have to win the field position game.”
Sherman, Wylie East and Lovejoy seem to have the first three spots locked for the playoffs. What will Denison have to do in order to get that final spot?
“If we win out, we are in. We still control our destiny. But we’ve got to win this one (Wylie on Friday) in order to have a realistic shot. They’ve got two district losses and we have three right now. If we lose, we’re not out of it mathematically, but if we win, we are most likely in. Basically, our playoffs start this week in Wylie.”
