Note: DHS won its first football game of the season against Royse City, 34-21, on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets are 1-2 in district play and the playoffs not out of the question.

You got your first win as the Denison coach on Friday. How did you feel?

“It was exciting; I felt great. I was proud for the kids. They were happy and they should be. It was a good win.”

Overall, how did the Yellow Jackets play against Royse City?

“We played well. There were times when we played better than others. The offense needs to play like we’re behind or its tied all the time. They’d score and we’d go down and score, too. I told them to stop looking at the scoreboard and just play.”

On offense, who were the outstanding performers of the game?

“Our offensive line did a great job. And Clifton Hines (senior quarterback) did a great job of managing the game. It was the best I’ve seen him play this season. A couple of young kids came in and did well. Tyler Reeves had a good game at tight end. Jake Walters on the offensive line had a phenomenal game.

On defense, our line kept the pressure on. We had some good quarterback pressures; and the turnovers, too. We stopped their running game. That fourth and short in the fourth quarter was key; it allowed us to go up by two touchdowns. All our linebackers played well. Kyle Siems had 10 tackles; that’s pretty good. Derrick Bennett played well. Jaleel Dade played well both ways; had some good catches and tackles. Nose guard Corey Asbel had a great game, too.”

With four district games left, there is that possibility of the playoffs. Is it too soon to be talking about such things?

“We need to wait until we get a couple more wins. We are concentrating on our next game and we’ll see what happens after that. We’re going to enjoy this win and get back to work. Our players will respond; they have all year long.”

That next game is Lucas Lovejoy, a strong district contender. What type of team is Lovejoy?

“They are a well coached team. They are sound at 6-0. They have multiple formations on offense; and their defense is solid like ours. They have a high touted linebacker who is being recruited (by Division I colleges).”

How do the Yellow Jackets match up with them?

“We match up well. We’re going to line up and block and tackle the best we can and see what happens. We’ve got to watch those multiple alignments or someone will be gone for six points. It’s going to be a good game; it’s Homecoming and we’ll be ready.”

Any injuries this week?

“Just one; Addison Coffman broke his wrist in the first quarter on Friday. He’s still being evaluated, so we’ll see how long he’s going to be out.”
