Note: The Denison Yellow Jackets lost 42-21 to the Sherman Bearcats in the annual “Battle of the Axe” game last Friday.
Overall, how did you feel your team played in this loss to rival Sherman Friday?
“We didn’t make plays when we had to; there are points in time when you have to perform; and we didn’t. We left receivers wide open when we should have stayed with our game plan. Our secondary has to get better.”
In the second quarter when the score was tied, 14-14, what did you think at that point?
“We had battled back from 14 points down. I felt good about our chances. I was very proud of our team. We competed well. We put the pressure on them.”
Everyone is talking about the fumble 25 seconds before halftime. What do you think was the turning point?
“Everyone is focused on that fumble, but in the series after we tied it at 14, we stopped them and got the ball back. I think if we had scored there, it would have been a different ball game. We would have been up 21-14 at that point. The fumble was big, but we still had a half to play.”
Is there anyone you want to single out in the ‘Axe’ game?
“Receiver Jaleel Dade had a great game; he even threw a touchdown pass. He caught one that we thought was one, too. He did really well.”
What about your quarterback, Clifton Hines?
“He played well; managed the game. He wants to win and he works very hard to be ready.”
What did you think of the atmosphere for the game since this was your first ‘Axe’ game?
“It was a great atmosphere. I really liked it. The game and feel was what I thought it would be. I wish we had won being at home, but it was a great feeling in that stadium.”
At the mid-point in the season, the Yellow Jackets are 0-5. How do you feel about the remainder of the schedule? All remaining games are district ones.
“When you are faced with a lot of adversity, your true colors come out. How you deal with it shows what type of team or person you are. We need to be successful and we are working to be that way. It will be nice to get that first win.”
You travel to Royse City on Friday night. How do you match up with the Bulldogs?
“We match up well with them. They like to run the ball. We’ll be ready for that.”
Do you have any injuries going into the last half of the season?
“No; no injuries. We practice in a way that reduces injuries and we have been lucky in the games. Everyone will be ready.”
With the holiday this week, you practiced in the morning on Monday. How did that go?
“We started at 8:30 a.m. and it went well. It’s good to get them in a routine on holidays. I have done this for a long time and it works out for us. It was a good practice; we’ll be ready to go Friday.”
