The Yellow Jackets lost to first place Wylie East, 57-36, on Friday to go to 0-4, 0-1 in 2012. DHS plays Sherman in the annual “Battle of the Axe” 7:30 p.m. Friday at Munson Stadium.
DHS lost its opening district game, but is there anything you can take away from the play of the team?
“It’s not how we wanted it to end up; our goal each week is to win. We did a lot of things right. There were some pressure situations in the game that we learned from. We’re starting to see how good a football team we really have.”
What about Dennard Whitfield, the junior running back?
“He had a great game; rushed for over 200 yards. He went from just five yards in the first game to this.”
What about the offensive line? How did they look?
“The OL had the best game of the season. The running game is a tribute to them and OL Coach Josh Knox and their work.”
How did senior quarterback Clifton Hines look in his fourth game in the new system?
“Clifton did well; he mentally managed the game. His running is something we needed. He’s grown up a lot this season. He’s making the runs we knew he could make.”
Overall, how do you think the Yellow Jacket offense is looking?
“Our pass routes are getting stronger; crisper. Overall, we are getting crisper.
And the defense?
“We took too many plays off; we can’t do that. We need to stay and maintain; stay within ourselves. We are down and up; it will look better when we put it all together. We will be solid.”
Is there anyone you want to single out in the game?
“The O-line as a group; they were outstanding. Justin Bigelow, our center, had a good game. So did Tyler Reeves, our tight end.”
How does it feel to be going into your first “Battle of the Axe” game this Friday?
“It feels exciting; any time you have a rivalry game of this magnitude, it’s exciting. This battle has been around for a long time.”
How do you think your team matches up with the Sherman Bearcats?
“We match-up well with them. They have a lot of confidence coming in here. I think it will be an exciting game. You can throw out the records when these two teams play. It always is a good game.”
What are you looking for in this game against Sherman this week?
“We always look to win; that’s our goal. I expect high energy. We just have to control the things we can control; and do the things that we can do. We need to take care of the football and play great defense.”
NOTE: Sherman will visit Denison on Friday for the 114th playing of the “Battle of the Axe,” Texas’ longest running rivalry game.
