Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 2 2018
The Sherman Bearcats are coming off a playoff season for the first time in a few years. The off season continues under second year Coach J.D. Martinez. Go Bearcats!!!
How is the off season program going?
“The kids are working hard; it is going well. I’m proud of them. We have a long way to go, but we are getting better.”
What are you doing in the off season at this point?
“We are in Phase 2 with lifting and conditioning. We are incorporating some football activities and agility drills.”
When will the next phase begin?
“After spring break, we will begin Phase 3 with more football activities.”
How many athletes are in the program?
“We have 110 upperclassmen; and the incoming freshmen in the fall.”
How has the recent UIL Realignment affected Sherman?
“It will be good; it will be challenging. The new district is spread out. There will be travel, but everybody has to be ready to play.”
Will all that extra travel (Texarkana, Tyler and Mesquite) affect how you play?
“We’ll be okay; we are going to be fine. We’ve still got to go play football. Luckily, we don’t have to go to Texarkana and Tyler in the same season. It will be challenging.”
Overall, how does the district look?
“It is very tough; there are some great teams in it. I’m happy with it. There is going to be some strong competition: Texas High, Tyler John Tyler and West Mesquite.”
And you start the season with Denison in the Battle of the Axe game. How will that be?
“We had to do it with the possible realignment. It turned out to be the best thing we could have done even if it is unusual. Denison only has two predistrict game; the first game was the only one we knew we had that wouldn’t interfere with district play.”
How is the attitude in the locker room at this point in the off season?
“We have a great attitude; the kids are working hard. We are young, but are getting ready.”
How many returning starters will you have in 2018?
“On offense, we will only have three and on defense, we will have four. We are young for sure.”
Will you have spring football this year?
“No, we’ve decided that it just won’t work this year. We’ve got both of our quarterbacks in baseball in May and school is out earlier than usual. We just can’t fit it in this time.”
This will allow you to have two scrimmages in August instead of just one. Who will be in those slots?
“We play our first scrimmage here against Sanger; and then, we travel to Princeton for the second scrimmage. It’s going to be here soon; we are excited.”
