Sherman Coach’s Blog Off-season 1   2018

The Sherman Bearcats are hard at work getting ready for the 2018 campaign. Plans are being made for spring football and the different schedule in the fall. Go Cats!!!

How is your offseason going so far?

“It is going well; the coaches and players are getting together to do what needs to be done. We are lifting all the time. We want to get stronger and be better in every phase of the game next season.”

In your second season as coach, the Bearcats made the playoffs. How did that feel?

“It was a great feeling; even though we lost 26-21, we felt good about what we did and where we are taking this program. We went 5-5 last year and we want to improve on that.”

What is the mood of the players?

“It is good. They are working hard and lifting. I am proud of their commitment.”

What phase are you in at this point of the off-season?

“We are in ‘power phase’ where we lift and run. Next week, we will test to see how strong they are. We will do bench press, squats and incline. We will also time the 40 yard dash and test agility including broad and vertical jumping.”

How many phases does the off season have?

“There are five phases: power, mobility, skill set, spring ball and the summer program.”

What about spring football this year?

“There is some discussion about it; we may not have it after all. We get that extra week in August if we don’t hold spring football. School is out so early this year; we may not have enough time to do it in May as we have been. We will decide in the coming weeks.”

How many athletes do you have in the program?

“We have about 100 juniors, sophomores and freshmen in our offseason. We estimate about 80 more will arrive in the fall from middle school. We have a small freshmen class this past year, so our numbers are increasing.”

The 2018 season will be your third year as coach. How do you view the program so far?

“We are headed in the right direction. We’ll be younger; it’s always hard to replace good seniors. We will have our quarterback, Blaze Benson, returning. He will be a senior. We’re still in the process of seeing what we have on offense and defense. We’re ‘Under Construction’ you could say. But we will be ready for Denison come game one.”
