The Denison Yellowjackets won the Battle of the Axe against Sherman last week, 49-24, to complete a 8-2 record during the 2017 regular season. Up next: Saginaw Boswell in the playoffs Friday at Apogee Stadium in Denton.
Denison has won five straight BOTA for the first time; how did that feel last week?
“We played well; we handled the distractions; and we stayed with the intensity. We can say we did it!”
What was the turning point in that game?
“I don’t think there was one turning point; we led most of the game. They did some things well, but our adjustments at half-time were great.”
How did the offense do?
“We put up almost 500 yards, so I think we did pretty good.”
What about the running game?
“We were good throughout, but very explosive in the third quarter. Bubba Roberts, a senior, blocked well and ran the option perfectly.”
What about quarterback Austin Emery?
“He managed the game well; he distributed the ball and made good decisions.”
What about the passing game?
“It was good; we had a couple of fourth down catches to keep us going. Pearce Barker and JaCarious Smith caught the ball well. And Caden Earnhart had a break out game.”
What about the defense?
“In the third quarter, we held them to three ‘three and outs’ with each one resulting in a touchdown for us. We held them out. Jordan Hunter had a good game, but there really weren’t any standouts because they all are standouts. Kenny Gaffney played defense, which he will do more of.”
What about the kicking game?
“We didn’t have to punt in the second half; we did well overall.”
You finish second in district after the win, so you play Saginaw Boswell in the first round of the playoffs. What type of team do they have?
“Outstanding; they played four rounds deep last year in the playoffs.”
How do you match up with them?
“I think we match up well. It’s going to be a good game. The kids have these goals and now, they get to check some of them off the list. We need to limit the big play and run the ball and stay on our blocks to win.”
How does it feel to be in the playoffs?
“It feels good to be in the playoffs; the kids expected it. Now, we just have to go do something with it.”
The Yellowjackets play Boswell Friday at 7 p.m. at UNT’s Apogee Stadium in the first round.
