The Denison Yellowjackets are coming off a close loss to Frisco Heritage last week as they go into district play Friday. The 3-1 Jackets are looking to make the playoffs!!!
Overall, how was the game last week?
“We scored a lot of points; we gained a lot of yardage, but we had trouble tackling their quarterback. You learn from your mistakes and move forward.”
What about the defensive effort last week?
“It was uncharacteristic of our defense; we expect better this week.”
What about the offense?
“We gained over 600 yards of total offense; it was one of our better performances since I’ve been here.”
What about your quarterback, Austin Emery?
“He’s getting better; he’s had a great week of practice, too. Each week, we want him to get better.”
Anyone on defense you want to single out for their performance?
“They (Frisco Heritage) have a talented quarterback; he made us miss.”
How did the kicking game go?
“We punted and returned well; we even blocked an extra point. We are good, but we can improve.”
What about your opponent, Wichita Falls High, this week: What kind of team are they?
“They are a good 2-2 team; they are much improved. They have brought more excitement to their fans this year. They’ve got a good coach; and they run the spread offense as well as anybody.”
What will you have to do to win?
“We have to block and tackle. We have to get on our blocks and stay; we have to move out fast on offense. And on defense, we have to line up correctly and tackle.”
This week you begin district play and a playoff push. What does that mean for you?
“I’m excited; I think we can do some things and surprise some people. The kids are ready; this is what we’ve worked for all off-season.”
It is a home game at Munson Stadium; do you have anything special happening?
“Yes, we are honoring the three 90s teams (1995-97) that played in the state championship game three years in a row. It will be fun before the game.”
How does the team feel about district play starting?
“They are ready; they have a great attitude. They have given good effort and will continue to do so. Everyone is gunning for (Denton) Ryan – the district favorite – we’ll see what happens.”
The Jackets will kick off with the Wichita Falls High School Coyotes at 7 p.m. Friday at Munson Stadium in downtown Denison.
