Denison Coach’s Blog Number 1 2017
The Denison Yellowjackets go into the season as a solid number two behind Denton Ryan for 2017. Coach Chad Rogers has been watching his team over the summer and is excited about the year.
After two weeks in pads and two scrimmages, how do you feel about the 2017 Yellowjackets?
“I feel good, really good about them. They have executed the offense and the defense is swarming to the ball. Our scrimmages have been solid; we are coming together as a team.”
How would you describe your players this season?
“We are coachable; we play with passion. It’s a close knit group; they are always improving.”
What are some of the things you have to do to be ready for the season opener Friday night?
“We worked on a lot of stuff in the scrimmages (against Paris and North Lamar). We put in the offense and defense; we’re about 80 percent done. We just want to get better each week and move fast on offense. The rest will take care of itself.”
Going into the scrimmages, were you set at both the offensive and defensive positions?
“We have had some good competition on the O-line and D-line. The offense had the biggest battles. We used the scrimmages to finalize our starters. But we’ve still got to get better and better.”
What about your starting quarterback Austin Emery; a senior this season?
“He’s done real well; he’s done everything we’ve asked. He runs the offense and is a great leader. His teammates respond to him. He’s quiet, but he lets his actions speak on the field.”
What about that quarterback position this year?
“We used five quarterbacks in the scrimmages because we don’t want what happened last year (Emery lost for the season) to happen this year. We are prepared this time around.”
You start off with perennial private school powerhouse Trinity Christian Academy this season. What are they like in 2017?
“They are traditionally a strong team; they run the spread offense. It’s going to be a barnburner with them going back and forth Friday. It will be a great game to watch.”
What else is happening Friday at Munson Stadium?
“We are having Senior Recognition Night; it will be special for all of them and their parents.”
How do you feel about the upcoming season overall?
“I feel great about the season; the culture in our locker room is special. I just want us to continue to harness that and work on it all season long.”
This is your sixth season at the helm. How does that feel?
“It is awesome; it’s great to be the DHS coach.”
