Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 7 2017

The Denison Yellowjackets have concluded their summer strength and conditioning program and look toward two-a-days beginning Monday. Full pads practice starts Friday. Coach Chad Rogers, beginning his sixth season, is optimistic about the 2017 campaign.

Overall, how did the summer go for the Yellowjackets?

“It was good; I’m pleased with the attendance. I feel good about their commitment.”

So, what’s next?

“Monday, we get equipment. We begin working on how to line-up; and basically, get into the groove of things for the fall. Expectations are high as always in Denison.”

When do you put full pads on?

“On Friday; we’re going to see where we’re at for the fall. We will have practice right here at the high school and use the indoor facility if we need to.”

How is the quarterback position looking?

“We are set with Austin Emery; he has had a great spring and summer. He’s a senior who has done well and we have high expectations for him. Other quarterbacks we have are Cabe Gosley, Pierce Baker and Zalin Wimbish.”

What about running back?

“We have Kenny Gaffney back from last year; we have some other fast runners, too.”

What about wide receiver?

“We are good there; we have Dalton Souther and Braden Roberts. They are looking good.”

What about the rest of the offense?

“The O-line is coming together; we are young but do have some experience. We have a little more size than in the past.”

Who are some of the players on defense?

“We have linebacker Nate Maulsby and Mateo Reyes; and we have several D-line guys back. Ty McFail, our free safety, has worked hard and should have a good year.”

How many returning starters?

“We have five on offense and eight on defense.”

How does the season shape up now that we are only a month away?

“Our pre-district games are tough; same as last year. Our district is competitive; I feel good about our chances. We will have a good team. I expect to be in the playoffs. Our goal is to make it.”
