Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 4 2017
The Sherman Bearcats are hard at work this off-season to get ready for the 2017 football season. Coach J. D. Martinez is excited about what he sees and is ready to begin his second season at the helm!
How is your summer program going?
“It is going great; the kids are working hard. We are doing our Performance Course….this is our strength and conditioning program. I’ve been with them for four years. This is the one we did last summer, too.”
With this being your first full off season with the team, how has it gone?
“As we get closer to fall practice, I can see the kids have bought in to what we are doing and what we want to do as a program. They have worked their tails off for us. We have a great opportunity to do some great things.”
How do you feel going into your second season?
“Anxious—we still have some questions, but with spring ball, we got the chance to address them. We are poised to have a great year.”
How do you think the team has handled the transition?
“I see that they are invested in what we are doing at this point. I’m very proud of them. We just need to keep improving.”
How many starters do you have on offense returning? And on defense?
“We have a young team; we’ve got six returning on offense and eight on defense.”
How does the offense look at this point of the summer?
“We have done some good things since spring ball; we’ve mostly thrown the ball, but I like what I see. We participated in the 7-on-7 program; we did pretty well, but we didn’t advance this year.”
What about defense?
“We are doing well; I like what I see here, too. We are going to get after the ball.”
What is your quarterback situation with the graduation of longtime starter David Bedgood?
“We’ve got a good competition with Ben Cross and Luke Lankford; we’ve got a good battle going. Ben, a senior, had a broken hand throughout spring ball, but he’s fully healed now. Luke got most of the snaps in the spring. We are in good shape.”
What about your running game?
“We are going to be fine; our O-line is solid and we have Nate coming back. I’m excited.”
What about the defense?
“We are going to have a solid defense; we have some good players on the front end and the back end. Coach Wilkinson (defensive coordinator) has done a great job with our defense.”
How many are in your program right now?
“We have 115 upperclassmen; and about 75 freshmen reporting this fall.”
When does fall practice start (Two-a-days)?
“Since we had spring practice, we don’t start until Aug. 14; that’s a Monday.”
When is your first scrimmage?
“It’s on Aug. 25 at Bearcat Stadium; we play Kennedale, who is always loaded.”
How does the district look in 2017?
“It is favorable; we have a shot to do well. Denton Ryan will be Denton Ryan; they are always great. The rest of us will have an opportunity to do something. We are shooting for one of the playoff spots.”
