Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 3
The Sherman Bearcats are wrapping up spring football practice with the annual spring game on Thursday at Bearcat Stadium (7:15 p.m.). Coach J.D. Martinez likes what he sees in his second season with the Cats.
How has spring football been going?
“We started May 1; and it’s going well. They are progressing. We have had time to evaluate them fully over the past four weeks. Our coaches are doing a super jop working with them.”
Without going into detail, what is the most important thing you’ve done this spring practice?
“We set goals earlier in the spring; what we wanted to do in May. We have accomplished all those goals and we are looking forward to the fall schedule and practice.”
How many athletes are involved in football for SHS?
“We have about 120 players in spring ball; and freshmen coming in next year.”
How about the offense?
“At first, during spring practice, the offense had the edge over the defense. They still look good; sharp. We are going to be ready.”
So, what about that defense?
“They have really been coming on; like I said, they came in behind the offense, but they have stepped it up and grabbed the edge.”
How have you handled the spring practice?
“That first week and second week, we went hard. We pushed our team; we went strong. Then, last week, we slowed down to give them a chance to catch their breaths. It has worked very well for us.”
Many schools are opting to forgo spring practice in Texas. What are your thoughts?
“We plan to continue to have it each spring. There is something to be said for it, but we will re-evaluate after next season.”
How does the district look for this fall?
“It looks tough; from top to bottom, it is going to be a challenge for everyone—not just us! We’ve got Denton Ryan-a perennial powerhouse-in it, so really everyone else is in a dogfight for the last three spots in the playoffs.”
Now that you have finished your first season at Sherman, how do you feel it went?
“We got some things accomplished; I’m proud of those. We got the community back involved and excited with Bearcat football. We just want to be the best possible team we can be; there is only up for us to go.”
What are your goals for the 2017 campaign?
“We want to do the best we can do; and of course, we want to make the playoffs. But not just make them; we want to win in the playoffs. That’s what we are working for!”
