Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 3 2017
The Denison Yellowjackets are working toward the 2017 season as they are in Phase 2 of the program. Coach Chad Rogers discusses what is happening and the plan for the rest of the school year.
Now, that you are fully in Phase 2, what are the players doing in the off season program?
“They are working a little more football now. They are working offense/defense and agility. Some competition work, too. We are still lifting to get stronger for the season.”
When does Phase 3 start and what does it include?
“We will start in mid-April; right after the district track meet. We will add more individual drills and move more into football; we will still lift as well.”
What about the rest of the year?
“Phase 3 includes a week on offense and a week on defense until mid May. Then, we start Phase 4 where we will hit the weight room hard again and start 7 on 7 activities.”
Then, what in the summer?
“We compete in the 7 on 7 UIL league and try to make it to state. And we will have the summer conditioning program in June and July.”
How many athletes are in the football program now?
About 125 total; we fluctuate a little. Mostly upperclassmen, but we have a strong freshman class.”
Who will be your starting quarterback?
“It will be Austin Emery; he is throwing great and looking good. He has fully recovered from that shoulder surgery that sidelined him last season. He will be a senior and we are looking forward to a great year from him. He’s pitching now with the baseball team.”
Are the Yellowjackets going to have spring football this year?
“No, this will be the fifth year in a row not to have it. We did the first year I was here, but that was more a product of me just getting here and needing to see what the team was. It just isn’t worth having now.”
Why is that?
“If you do spring football (the month of May per UIL rules), you have to start a week later in the fall. By not doing it, we get that extra week and an extra scrimmage. As a coach, you can try a lot of new stuff in that second scrimmage that you wouldn’t be able to do without it. With that extra week in the fall schedule, we get nine practices AND the extra scrimmage (as oppose to 18 practices in May). It’s almost as good as spring ball.”
So, when will practice start in the fall?
“Two-a-Days begin Aug. 7; school actually starts Thursday Aug. 17 and then we have our first scrimmage on Aug. 18.”
Any other consideration for not having spring ball?
“Yes, we have a lot of involved athletes. They are in baseball, soccer, track and powerlifting. We are one of the smaller 5A schools, so we have to be flexible. Also, we have the End of Course exams in May; this makes it difficult to schedule. And, too, our coaches have a regular classload. It’s just better all around to wait until the fall practice.”
What is the attitude of the players in the football off season program?
“They are ready to hit it in August. They are getting better and putting in the work every day. They are working hard; I am very proud of their effort.”
