Denison Coach's Blog 12 2016

By: Coach Chad Rogers
Denison Coach’s Blog 12 2016 The Denison Yellowjackets beat Sherman, 35-30, in the annual Battle of the Axe game last Friday and are now on their way to the state playoffs against Saginaw Boswell Friday night in Denton. How did you think the game went overall? “Well, we won; it was good. It was a hard fought game. Sherman played well. I was proud of our kids; they answered the bell.” What about your offense? “(QB) David Sauceda got hurt early, but the kids responded. They executed the offense and got some things done. The Offensive Line was great; Nick Sparks filled in at QB; he was good. Tre Lyday was very good with 304 yards rushing. Kenny Gafney stepped up at the right time. This game gives us a lot of confidence going forward.” What about your defense? “They just keep getting better and better. Sherman had 130 yards of offense in the first half, but only ended up with 160 in the game. We had two fourth down stops and stopped a fake punt. Kade Gordi had 17 tackles and Tavian Rucker has his usual good game. We intercepted two passes. Overall, I was impressed.” What about Special Teams? “Since Sauceda is our kicker, too, we had to bring in a kid who had never kicked in a varsity game before. He did good on PATs and punted all right, too.” How did it feel coaching in the BOTA game again? (This was the fourth win out of five BOTA games Rogers has coached at Denison.) It feels good to win; the atmosphere is second to none….just awesome.” Denison finished third in district and goes to the state playoffs for the second time in your tenure at DHS. How do you match up with Boswell? “We match up with them pretty good; at this level, everyone is good. We have to take care of business. Boswell has a talented defense and a good freshman quarterback who has gotten better every game.” How does it feel to make the playoffs again at Denison? “It’s always exciting; it’s a good feeling. We are having a good week of practice and everyone is ready to go this Friday. I’m looking forward to it.” Denison travels to UNT’s Apogee Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. to face Saginaw Boswell in the first round of the playoffs.
