Denison Coach's Blog 10 2016

Denison Coach’s Blog 10 2016 The Yellowjackets beat newcomer Denton Braswell, 49-20, last week to put their record at 3-1 in district with two games to go. Now, it’s on to No. 1 Denton Ryan! How do you think the team played last week? “We played well; we started fast and played fast. We scored points. I am pleased.” How about the offense specifically? “They did well; they did exactly what we asked of them. We need more first downs in the second half, but we are working on that. David Sauceda (QB) played well and completed some passes; he ran the offense.” What about the ‘No QB’ formation? “We used that some; we just wanted to keep them honest.” What about your offensive line? “Our O-line did well; they continue to get better. We just take it one play at a time and do it to the best of our ability.” How about your defense? “They did good; they ran to the ball well. Our first touchdown was a defensive interception. We had a fumble recovery, too. Tavian Rucker (DE) had another good game for us.” What about the kicking game? “We punted well; our kick off coverage was good. We are doing the right things in the kicking game.” This week, it’s No. 1 in the state Denton Ryan, which happens to be in your district. How do you match up with them? “They are a very good team; tops in the state. They have one of the best defenses I’ve seen. The coaches do a great job. And we have a short week to get ready for them. It’s our first Thursday game this year, but we have a good game plan.” What are your goals for the game? “We can’t let them score first; and no big plays. Ryan has quality talent at quarterback, receiver and running back. Their QB is committed to Oklahoma State already (as a junior). He’s athletic and throws the ball well. We have to be patient; and get first downs on them.” How about that Thursday game concept? “We lose a day of practice, but it makes you more focused with the practice you do have. I think that has helped us get ready for Ryan. It’s been intense. I like Thursday games; we’ll have an extra day to get ready for Sherman.” The Jackets play at 7 p.m. at C.H. Collins Complex in Denton Thursday night; and have no injuries among starters. NOTE: The Denison Lady Jackets Volleyball Team qualified for the playoffs as the fourth seed in the district; it is their first playoff appearance since 2010.
