Sherman Coach's Blog 1 2106

By: Coach J.D. Martinez
Sherman Coach’s Blog 1 2016 The Sherman Bearcats – under new Head Coach J.D. Martinez – began the season with a close loss to Sulphur Springs, 43-42, last week. The Cats showed improvement and are ready for the next challenge. How did you feel the team did overall in this first game? “It was a great learning experience for these kids; they learned to work together and that is key. They now know they can be down in a game and come back. That’s not a given for every team.” How do you think the offense did? “We have to cut down on mistakes; but we did okay. Not great, but okay.” What do you take away about the offense? “We have a lot of room for improvement even if we scored 42 points. For a first game, I am pleased.” How about your defense? “We made our half time adjustments; they played well. We gave our team an opportunity to win.” What about your kicking game? “Pedro Salazar has got a leg; he had five or six touchbacks. And he only had one missed extra point; he had a great game.” By some accounts, you were being demonstrative and animated on the sidelines when some points were scored. What was that all about? “I want our players to see excitement from their coaches and from me. We expect them to be positive and I want to show them that we as coaches are, too. We have high expectations and we need to be part of that process for our team.” Are there any players you want to mention from last Friday’s game? “Rashawn Savage played well; and DeShawn Nelson as a receiver and DB did, too. Our running backs and O-Line played well and ran the ball well. David Bedgood (Quarterback) did a super job. And connor Hughes – a Division 1 baseball commit – had two touchdowns as a receiver. I’m happy for him. He wasn’t going to play, but he came out and is doing a great job for us.” What about the game this week? “We match up well with them. We have to eliminate turnovers and make fewer mistakes. They have some talented players. They have a run power offense and a good defense. It’s going to be a good game.” The game will be at Bearcat Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. with activities on the Municipal Lawn beginning at 5:30 p.m.
