Sherman Coach's Blog Off Season 6

By: Coach J.D. Martinez
Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 7 The Sherman Bearcats have begun fall practice this week for the 2016 season. Under first year Coach J.D. Martinez, the Cats will put on the pads Friday for the first time. The team have been 1-9 the past two seasons, but hope to improve and compete for the playoffs in the new District 5-5A! Over the first three days of fall practice, how has the mood been? “We’ve started fall practice with a lot of enthusiasm. The kids are responding well. The atmosphere is positive; the kids are responding to me and the coaches. They are getting after it. It’s a good place to be for football.” What have you been doing these first few days? “We have been installing the offense and defense. We’ve gotten the first basic plays in place for the offense. We are progressing right where we left off in the summer. They are grasping what we want them to do. I’m excited about our offense.” What about the defense? “We are working on where to line up; we are working on continuity. The kids have just been fantastic. I’m excited about them. Our defensive staff has been working hard on the scheme; and I think it will surprise some people. We are really flying around the ball.” The Bearcats have a scrimmage coming soon. Who do you play and what do you expect? “Yes, it’s Aug. 12 against Frisco. (at Frisco Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.) We will find out who our players are. It will be a great opportunity to develop our game plan. I think we will make progress.” Do you have a second scrimmage before the season starts on Aug. 26 (at Sulphur Springs)? “Yes, we scrimmage Kennedale on Friday, Aug. 19 there. I think by then, we will see what our team is going to be. There is always room for improvement, but that second scrimmage will give us a good feel for the team as a whole.” What about special teams? “Yes, we are putting them in as well. We have specific times set aside for special teams. We hope that we have a solid kicking game; it can make the difference during the season. We are putting an emphasis on it for sure.” Has anyone stood out early on in practice? “No, not really; we’re still in shorts. Everyone looks good in shorts. We’ll know more after we get on the pads.” What do you like about this early part of the season before scrimmages and games? “I like that we can mix it up; get them hitting each other for the first time. It’s an exciting time. We learn who’s who and what we might be able to do during the season. It’s just as exciting for the coaches as the players. It’s all about the teaching and putting things in place for a season.” The Bearcats end the season on Nov. 4 with the annual “Battle of the Axe” game in Denison at 7 p.m.
