Denison Coachs Blog Off Season 5
The Denison Yellowjackets are preparing their off season work for the 2016 campaign against new district foes, but ones DHS has played in the past, specifically schools from Denton and Wichita Falls.
What is happening during the spring part of off season?
We are starting Phase 4 and it will go through the end of school. We will work on fundamental football; offense one week and defense the next. We will work special teams in there, too. We are going to be active in Phase 4.
How are the players attitudes going into the stretch run of off season?
They have been good all off season. We have some great senior leadership for next year and these guys are setting the tone for our team.
Will Denison have spring football drills this year?
No, we havent for a couple of years and this has worked for us. There are a lot of schools that dont hold spring practice. With the UIL rules we have now, it limits what we can do in the fall.
How many kids do you have in the program now?
We have 60 upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) and about the same number of sophomores. We have a strong program with good numbers and these kids have great attitudes. They are believing in our system; and they cant wait for the fall.
What else have you been doing?
We participated in the spring clean-up with the city a few weeks ago. All our athletes took a Friday afternoon to help their community. I was impressed by their work and willingness to help. Its a great program and Im glad we could pitch in to help our community.
Are there going to be any changes in the Denison Yellowjacket offense or defense this year with the new district?
No, we will run the same system we have been. We moved out west to Region I with Wichita Falls and Denton.
How is that going to be for you and your team?
Change is good; we will be seeing new faces and some new schools. (Wichita Falls High, WF Rider, Denton High, Denton Ryan, Denton Braswell and of course, Sherman.) We are looking forward to the challenge.
You went 5-5 last season and didnt make the playoffs, what is your goal for 2016?
We are looking to improve. We have nine returning starters on offense and five on defense. We only lost our two receivers to graduation, so we hope to hit the ground running on offense.
Any other changes for next season?
The new district voted to change the start time for games to 7 p.m. They have been 7:30 p.m. for as long as I can remember, but they wanted to change, so we agreed. And because all our district games are 7 p.m. then all our other games have to be 7 p.m.
How will this affect the Yellowjackets?
It wont affect us; I like our routine, but we will adjust a little and make it work.
Denison will open the 2016 season with two scrimmages: Paris North Lamar (home) and Paris High (there) on Aug. 12 and Aug. 18, respectively. Non district opponents include TCA, Frisco, Abilene Wylie High School and Frisco Heritage. The open date is Sept. 30 and the Jackets face Sherman Nov. 4. (home)
