The Denison Yellow Jackets have completed two scrimmages and are getting ready for the season opener at home Friday against Frisco Liberty. Coach Chad Rogers talks about the scrimmages and where the defending district champs are going into the season.
The first scrimmage was against Graham on Aug. 15; how did the Jackets come out of that game type action?
“We stayed healthy, which is always good. We got to go against someone besides ourselves, which was also good. We learned some of the things we need to get before the season. We got some good video to show the kids, too.”
What about the Wichita Falls Rider scrimmage on Friday? What did you see from your team?
“We got more physical from the first scrimmage. We just can’t give up that long ball. It will come; our secondary will get there. Coach (Reggie) Hunt is working with them.”
How would you break down your team from that scrimmage?
“I haven’t seen the video yet, but our second series was good; better than the first (on offense). We were bouncing around on defense; the tempo was good. I can see progress on both sides of the ball.”
Is there anyone you would like to single out in the scrimmage on Friday?
“Steven Wagner (receiver) caught the ball well. Our defense has got to improve; and they will. We got to the quarterback some; we’re going to need that.”
How was Rider in terms of what you might see this season?
“They are in our same class (5A) but they have that good receiver (Division I college prospect) and he beat us some. We’ve just got to make that play. The teams we are going to see aren’t much different.”
What about your season opener this Friday at the new Munson Stadium?
“I don’t know much about Liberty; they have a new coach, new scheme. But we will get video from their scrimmage and start to game plan over this weekend.”
How did Devon Blanton (starting quarterback) do in this latest scrimmage?
“He did well; he read things right. He will get better as the season progresses.”
How about your starting line-up?
“It is set for the most part; we’re just getting ready for Friday.”
How will it feel to open the newly renovated stadium when you take the field this week?
“It will feel awesome. The kids are excited; and we all are excited about the support we get from this community. We will be ready.”
