Sherman Coach’s Blog First for 2014
Coach Bill Patterson is beginning his first season with the Sherman Bearcats; he has had stints at Canyon, Naaman Forest and Justin Northwest. He also coached 13 years at the collegiate level. He is entering his 31st year of coaching football.
You came in right before Spring Practice in May. How has the program been going since you got here?
“It’s been going good; we’ve made some progress through the spring and summer. We have five returning on offense and four on defense. We have a lot of guys who will be playing for the first time at the varsity level.”
How would you classify the Bearcats for this upcoming season?
“We are young; very young. We don’t even have a quarterback who’s played much.”
Given the youth of your team, what are some of your goals for this year?
“We want to make progress; we want them to get better each week. We want to be competitive in all our games.”
What type of offense and defense will you be running here at Sherman?
“We will have the spread offense; the quarterback will always be in the shotgun with one back. It’s the best offense there is for the personnel we have. It’s where we are right now. On the defensive side of the ball, we will have a ‘4-2-5’ set patterned after TCU (Texas Christian University); it’s what I have done my entire career and we are the most comfortable with it.”
What about your skill position players?
“We have a couple of guys coming back who have caught some balls. We are really young at receiver right now. We are looking at Clay Gilbert and David Bedgood at quarterback. They both have a good chance to make it; they are very athletic. I’m excited
about both of them. Tyson Jones and Cameron Pleasant will be running the ball for us.”
What about the defense?
“We have more guys coming back. The defense is just easier; you’ve just got alignment and assignment. We’re going to let the kids run to the ball; guys like Jonathan Torres and Chad Perry. And Dakota Denny had 81 tackles last year. We’ll be okay on defense.”
How about special teams?
“Brandon Shelton is our punter, but beyond that, we are open at kicker. We have a lot of kicks vying for kicker, too. We’re set at deep snapper with Noah Rainey.”
What is the district like this season?
“It’s a strong district; from top to bottom. It’s tough. Denison will be good; and you have McKinney and Lovejoy. We’re going to have to put our heads down and get better.”
What will be fans be seeing from the 2014 Sherman Bearcats?
“Improvement every week. They’ll see a team that has some character, some discipline and one that plays hard.”
Are there any players to watch?
“Yes, we have Jonathan Torres, Aaron Garza, DJ Briscoe, Chad Perry, Cameron Pleasant, Dakota Denney, Kevin Wright, Tyson Jones, Treyson Jones, Andre Marroquin and Dalton Fielder.”
How do you feel about being in Sherman?
“I like it; it’s a one school town. This is my first time to have that. I know the community is behind us and only us. It’s time to get started; I’m very excited. I am glad for this opportunity to help Sherman be great again.”
NOTE: In addition to Patterson, the Bearcat football staff includes Noble Polk, Robert Johnson, Bubba Sedlacek, Bell Cobbs, Matt Thompson, Lee Hart and Justin Jennings.
The Bearcats will open the season with a scrimmage Aug. 22 at Lakeview Centennial in Garland. The Bearcats begin fall practice Monday at 3:30 p.m. and will continue every day until school starts. The season opens against Frisco Lone Star Aug. 28 in Frisco.
