Denison Coach's Blog 2 2018

Denison Coach’s Blog Number 2   2018
The Denison Yellowjackets beat their rival Sherman Bearcats, 41-16, in the annual “Battle of the Ax” Game last week. The Jackets now focus on their final pre district game against Burleson Centennial; then eight district games round out the 2018 season.
What are your thoughts on the “BOTA” Game this year?
“We did real well considering it was a first game. We had a big third quarter again; and we had three interceptions and a blocked punt overall. The game didn’t start out well for us, but it got better.”
What about your quarterback, Cade Gordy, a senior in his first start?
“Cade played great; he got better as the game went on. It was his first ever as a quarterback. He’s a tough kid.”
What about the running game?
“We couldn’t get in a rhythm early; they kept up off balance. Then, we started clicking. J.D. Price (a freshman) played a great game. He’s a great kid and he had 146 yards in his first game as well. He’s only going to get better.”
Did you know about this freshman?
“JD works very hard; yeah, we knew he was very talented.”
What about the passing game?
“It wasn’t bad; we got comfortable finally. Senior Pierce Barker had a touchdown. We played hard; we had some first game jitters, but the effort was high. I think we will improve.”
What about the defense?
“We forced four turnovers; and had several three and outs. We were on it for the most part, but we can be better. More first game stuff; I can’t say enough about their effort.”
What about the offensive and defensive lines?
“We did well; not many penalties.”
“We played well; no big plays.”
What about the kicking game?
“We did miss an extra point, but we did well overall. We have some strong legs. We were solid with good returns and coverages.”
What about Burleson Centennial, your second and final pre-district game?
“They run the flexbone; they play well. It will be a good contest for us. We have to travel, so that will be good for us, too.”
What will it take to win?
“We have to slow down their offense; and have some big offensive plays of our own. We will need to get a lead; they will want to play slow. We will need to move fast on offense.”
What about your second game of the season? Are there any trends?
“Yes, usually, we see a lot of improvement over the first game. We’ve seen game speed by then and can adjust as a team and as players. We want to see that this week.”
What about this nine team district Denison is in?
“In 18 years of coaching, this is the first one I’ve been in. I don’t know how it will go because I’ve never done it. I think you just get ready for it; and play every game as if it’s crucial. You have to find out what you do best and do it.”
Denison plays at Burleson Centennial Friday at 7:30 p.m. and then will begin district play on Sept. 14 at Munson Stadium at 7 p.m. against Frisco Lebanon Trail. It will be senior night.
