Denison Coach's Blog Off Season 8 2018

By: Coach Chad Rogers
Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 8   2018
The Denison Yellowjackets are finishing their Strength and Conditioning Camp this week with an eye toward fall practice, which starts Aug. 6. Go Jackets!!!
How has the summer program gone?
“It has gone well; they have had good attention. We have three days left this coming week and then we are done.”
How has the mood been during the summer?
“They have had good attitudes all along; they are really excited about this season.”
What has been the routine this summer in the S&C Camp?
“We do free weights; machine weights, agility drills and conditioning. We do character talks for about 20 minutes while they cool down. For six weeks, we have trained three days a week.”
Fall practice starts Monday, Aug. 6; what are the highlights of that first month?
“We will have ‘Meet the Jackets” night on Aug. 11 with not only the football players, but all the fall sports teams in attendance. We will have a scrimmage in Argyle on Aug. 17 and then a scrimmage at home against Paris on Aug. 23. Then, our first game, against Sherman, on Aug. 31.”
How is the team looking right now as you go into fall practice?
“They are good athletes with good work ethic; they are fun to coach. I am excited about this season as well. We will know a lot more after the scrimmages.”
What is your situation at quarterback going into the season?
“We have senior Cade Gordy; junior Xaylon Wombish set for us. Also, one of our starting receivers, Pierce Barker, can step in if necessary.”
How is your offense looking?
“We are looking good; ready to take off. We have five returning starters and will continue our spread offense.”
What about defense?
“We are expecting them to be good; we have eight returning starters. On both offense and defense, we have outstanding coaches. I feel blessed to be part of this coaching staff.”
How does this new district look?
“It is a strong district with very good football teams like Lake Dallas and Lovejoy. We will also have a new school in its first year of varsity ball: Frisco Memorial. Lebanon Trail is only in its second season while Braswell is in its third.”
Do you have a different approach to playing schools that are new such as Memorial?
“No; we take the same approach each week. We spend more time on us during practice than the opponent. It’s always been more about us.”
During fall practice, what will the schedule be?
“We will have a morning practice. It’s not two-a-days anymore; the UIL has changed that. After lunch, we will do weight training and some film work.”
There are some new UIL rules for fall practice. What are the major ones?
“We can put on shoulder pads on Wednesday that first week instead of Friday, but we can’t hit until Thursday for the first time. There are some changes for games, too, for this year especially in the kicking game.”
How many athletes are in the football program?
“About 110 players; the same as the end of the school year.”
This is beginning your seventh season at the helm of the Yellowjackets. Any thoughts?
“I feel good about what we are doing and where we are at. I want us to be better. Our staff has stuck together and we all benefit from that especially the kids. I like where the program is and where it is going.”
