Sherman Coach's Blog Off Season 6 2018

By: Coach J.D. Martinez
Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 5   2018
The Sherman Bearcats are working this summer to be ready for fall practice Aug. 6. In addition, the team will play host to a Lineman Challenge on July 9. Go Cats!
How is the off-season going as we get into June?
“It is going well; we are in the heart of the summer with the season only weeks away. The kids are really doing good.”
What are the players doing right now?
“They are in our strength and conditioning course. We go from 8-9:45 every morning. Then, the middle school boys and all the girls work from 10-11:45. They are all working hard.”
What do they do in the program?
“They are lifting weights; running. We work on flexibility and agility. They are getting stronger.”
What else are you doing in the program?
“Weekly, we have been in a 7-on-7 league. It is a round robin sort of thing; we go to a different town every week and play two games. I’m pleased with what we’ve done.”
Did you compete in the state qualifying for 7-on-7?
“Yes, we did, but we didn’t qualify. We went to two qualifying tournaments in Grapevine and at L.D. Bell (High School). We competed well; I am happy with our effort.”
Anything else?
“We competed in the Lineman Challenge. It’s also a round robin deal; we are hosting it on July 9. They have really been working hard and competing well with linemen from all over the area.”
How long with the Strength and Conditioning Course be?
“We will work until July 26; and then on July 30, we will put on a football camp for grades 7-9. It’s getting exciting around here.”
About how many players are in the program?
“We have about 110 players plus incoming freshmen.”
Is Blaze Benson still your starting quarterback?
That first game is only about 60 days away; the “Battle of the Axe,” what do you think?
“We are getting ready; we are excited for it to be first (Aug. 31). We are trying to enjoy the summer right now; and get in shape, but come August, we will be ready to go.”
