Sherman Coach's Blog Off Season 5 2018

By: Coach J.D. Martinez
Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 5 2018 The Sherman Bearcats are working in anticipation of the season’s start in August here in May. Coach J.D. Martinez is pleased with the team’s progress as he begins his third season at Sherman. How is the off season program going? “It is going very well; we are in Phase 4. We are working on football skills mostly. We are working on 7x7 and a lot of great things. The kids are working hard.” The 7x7 program is based on state qualification When do you play? “We play in mid May at a state qualifier and we have to win it to qualify for the state tournament in the summer. There will be pool play and then a playoff of top teams. We will also be playing in a league at LD Bell High School in June regardless.” What are some of the things you are doing in Phase 4? “We are doing those football drills; both individual and unit. We work on offense and defense each week. We work on readiness and reaction, too.” Who is your starting quarterback? “It’s still going to be Blaze Benson.” How many athletes are in the program at this point? “We have about 100 players plus our incoming freshmen. We expect about the same as last year; it will be a good number.” The first game of the season is the “Battle of the Axe” game. How do you feel as it is getting closer? “We are getting prepared for it; it’s only about three months away. (Aug. 31). It’s a good thing we scheduled it this way as our realignment put us in crowded districts. We secured the game; that’s the important part. I’m excited; we’re excited.” This is the beginning of your third season at Sherman. How does it feel? “The program is going in the right direction. I’m happy with it at this point. We’re young, but we’ll work and we’ll get there. I love being here; the kids are doing what I ask and we are progressing. We’ll be ready!”
