Sherman Coach's Blog Off Season 3 2018

By: Coach J.D. Martinez
Sherman Coach’s Blog Off Season 3 2018

The Sherman Bearcats are working to get ready for the “Battle of the Axe” game on Aug. 31, the first game of the season. The off season program is in full swing. Go Cats!

How is the off season program going right now?

“It is going well; the kids are working hard. The coaches are working hard to communicate to the kids what needs to be done at this point in the year; the whole nine yards.”

What phase are you in?

“We are in Phase 3; still lifting mostly. We are slowly adding offense and defense skills and drills. It is all important at this point.”

What exactly are you doing in the football portion of Phase 3?

“We are doing position based skills; we are working on the game itself. The position coaches are getting with their players to do position specific drills. We are doing all of this in the athletic period.”

How many athletes do you have in the program?

“We have about 100 players plus the incoming freshmen next fall.”

How is their attitude at this point in the program?

“They have the greatest attitude. We are all learning who will be leaders. They are figuring it out.”

Do you have any more thoughts about the recent realignment (for the 2018-20 bienium)?

“No, we are just excited about playing different teams; about the challenges each presents.”

This begins your third year at Sherman. How do you think the program is progressing?

“It is coming along; we are happy with the progress. I think all the sports are heading in the right direction. There are a lot of positive things happening at SISD; at the high school, too. And we are getting a new high school soon among other things. It’s a great place to be right now.”
