Denison Coach's Blog Off Season 2017 1

Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 2017 1

The Denison Yellowjackets made an abrupt exit in the state playoffs in November in a first round loss. The Jackets are now into their off season program; one that will lead them to the 2018 football season.

How is the off season program going here in December?

“It is going really well. We are making some progress; we are doing our line runs; we are teaching what to do and how to do it exactly right every time. If we don’t, we do it again.”

What is the focus of this early off season program?

“Mostly speed and agility drills. We do a lot of testing: the 40 (yard dash), shuttle, power clean, deadlift and other weight lifting.”

What phase are you in right now?

“Really, our phases begin in January. Right now, we are all getting adjusted to what we need to do in the months leading up to August (2018). Like I said, we are doing speed development and doing two lifts per day.”

How are the numbers looking in the football program?

“We have the highest numbers I’ve seen since I’ve been here (seven years). We have 80 upperclassmen and about 40 freshmen.”

What is your philosophy in the offseason and football in general?

“To get better every day; every year. I’m a coach, husband, teacher and parent. I try to improve in all these areas all the time. I want my players to have the same mindset; improve in whatever you are doing.”

What advise do you give your players in football and in general?

“I tell them to have priorities in life; and with our football team.”

You mentioned phase 1 earlier; what is the schedule for this off season?

“We begin phase 1 in January; we lift every day and work on speed and agility. Phase 2 begins Feb. 8; this is when we retest everyone to see what improvement they’ve made. Then, we move to phases three and four, which are more football oriented.”

How do you feel about the program that you’ve built over these seven years?

“I’m proud of what we have here in Denison; just this year, we have four academic all state players: Austin Emery, Ty McPhail, Darien Butler and Mateo Reyes. Our girls basketball team is ranked 11th in the state. Soccer is starting to heat up; and we are looking forward to baseball and track seasons.”
