For the Kids

By: Dwayne Wilder
“For the Kids”

The 23rd Annual “For the Kids” Toy Run is set for Sunday, Dec. 3 with a new route and new ending location.

“We will be ending at the VFW in Sherman on Baker Drive,” explained Stan Masson, one of the original organizers of the event. “But it’s all still ‘For the Kids’.”

The route will begin at Classic of Texoma on US 75 in north Denison and will follow FM 84 to US 69 South (Austin Avenue) to Spur 503 and onto Texoma Parkway around the loop ramp. Then, bikers and other vehicles will continue to the US 82 east access road and turn right on Frisco Road the few blocks to Baker Drive.

The annual event is “Big Kids Helping Little Kids,” according to Masson. He and others put together the toy run more than 20 years ago when they saw how many Grayson County children went without a Christmas.

“It’s all about the kids. We do it for the children who might not have a Christmas without this event,” explained Masson. “We want to help them and their families have a great holiday. It fills our hearts to do it.”

Registration is from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with wheels hitting the pavement at 1 p.m. Classic of Texoma is located at 2020 US 75 Denison and VFW #2772 is at 1707 Baker Drive in Sherman. There will be patches, pins and t-shirts available. A barbecue dinner will begin at 2 p.m. and there will be live auctions and raffles afterwards. A live band will perform at 4 p.m. as well.

The run benefits the Salvation Army of Grayson County; along with the Bob Skaggs Food Drive at Thanksgiving, it helps fill the shelves at the agency for an entire year. The Salvation Army’s motto is “Doing the Most Good” and it is something that “For the Kids” strives to do.

“We bring the toys; and we are going to keep doing it,” concluded Masson.
