The Denison Yellowjackets are 6-1, 3-0 on the season and one win away from the playoffs. The Jackets beat Denton High last week, 35-14, to remain undefeated in district.
Overall, how was the game for your team?
“It was a good win; the team did well. Our defense held them to one yard in the second half. It felt good.”
How did the offense do?
“We ran well once we settled down; we started slow and they put us in some holes. We overcame it. We had three runners go over 100 yards rushing.”
How was the passing game?
“The pass was there most of the night, but we never could get it going. We reverted to the run and did some damage. We didn’t need to pass after that.”
How did Austin Emery do?
“As our quarterback, he managed the game well. He did the read option well and rushed for over 100 yards. We’re happy to take what the defense gives us.”
How did the defense do overall?
“We held them to seven points (the other Denton TD was a kick off return). Our defensive line did great. They have a young quarterback; we pressured him. But he’s going to be good one day.”
What about the linebackers and defensive backs?
“Our backers did well; the defensive backs weren’t tested much. They covered well.”
There was a Denton player carted off the field in this game. What happened to him?
“He was taken to TMC with a dislocated knee; they kept him an hour or so and he was on his way home. I was proud of our kids with the way they handled themselves during the injury time-out.”
This week, you get Denton Braswell, the new school only in its second year. What kind of team do they have?
“They are a whole lot better than they were last year. They are going up and down the field. They are competing every week; doing things right.”
What will you guys have to do to win this game?
“We will have to stay on our blocks; and tackle right. We have to pressure their quarterback; and execute our offense.”
You are undefeated in district play. How does that feel at this point in the season?
“We are happy as a team; I am proud of them. We set goals at the beginning of the season and are accomplishing some of them. We are a good team; and we only want to get better each week.”
Denison will play Denton Braswell in Denton Friday at 7 p.m. A win will put the Jackets in the playoffs. There are three games left including Friday’s game.
