Denison Coach's Blog 8 2017

By: Coach Chad Rogers
Denison Coach’s Blog 8 2017 The Yellowjackets are coming off a big win, 41-38, in OT, against Wichita Falls Rider last week. The win puts the Jackets at 2-0 in district play and 5-1 for the season. Denison is ready to go for the playoff run! How would you describe the game last week in Wichita Falls? “It was a big win! It was our first overtime game this season, too. It was overall, a good game. We stuck together when we had to; and got the job done.” How did you feel late in the game when it was trading touchdowns? “We thought we could get to OT, but we were playing to win the entire time.” What was the turning point? “When Rider had to settle for the field goal in OT, our kids on the sidelines started saying, ‘We got this!’ I knew where it was going.” How did your offense play? “Overall, it was good; they showed us a lot of different looks. We finally overcame them.” How did Austin Emery play (senior quarterback)? “He played well. This was one of his best games. The more practice and games he gets, the better he is.” How did the running game do? “At times, it was good. They defended it well, but we adjusted.” What about the defense? “Considering the first quarter where we gave up three touchdowns, we did all right. We settled down; and started playing our football.” What about the kicking game? “We missed a PAT and a field goal; we punted more than I wanted to. We can’t do that; it will come back on you later in the game.” You play Denton High next; what kind of team do they have? “They are a young team, but very athletic. They are a good football team. Their record (3-4) is deceiving; they played Denton Ryan (district leader and ranked third in state) to the end. “ What will you have to do to win? “We have to be physical; we have to execute our offense; and on defense, we have to make it uncomfortable for their quarterback. We have to disrupt his rhythm. We have to cover the deep ball.” What will you have to look for in this game? “They will try some on-side kicks and trick plays to get some momentum; we have to be ready for them.” How does it feel to be 2-0 in district at this point? “It feels good; we expect to be here. We are playing well and getting better. We’ll see what the record is at the end of the season.” The Yellowjackets play Denton High School at Munson Field at 7 p.m. Friday in the next district game.
